Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader S.V. Sankanur has secured a third consecutive victory in the Karnataka Legislative Council after winning the biennial election for the West Graduates’ Constituency. The counting of ballots, conducted at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad, concluded in the early hours of October 28 following an eighteen-hour tabulation process.
According to official election returns reported by The Hindu, Sankanur defeated his primary opponent, Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai, by a margin of 9,323 votes. Sankanur polled 33,711 first-preference votes against Limbikai’s tally of 24,388 votes, maintaining an uninterrupted BJP hold on the regional council seat.

Vote Breakdown and Invalidation Trends
The counting commenced at 8:00 a.m. on October 27 and wrapped up by 2:00 a.m. on October 28. Returning Officer and Belagavi Regional Commissioner K.M. Janaki stated that a total of 73,691 votes were cast across the constituency, of which 63,446 were deemed valid.
A significant factor in the election was the high volume of rejected ballots. Official figures released by the Belagavi Regional Commissioner's office via The Hindu showed that 10,245 votes were declared invalid. This number of disqualified ballots exceeded the eventual victory margin of 9,323 votes, highlighting ongoing voter marking discrepancies in preferential voting systems.
Among independent contenders, Kantakumar R. finished third with 4,055 votes, while the remaining 11 candidates in the 14-person field registered fractional shares.

Electoral Dynamics in West Graduates Seat
Sankanur established an early advantage during tabulation, opening a lead of 2,065 votes after the first round of counting. That margin widened steadily through the subsequent five rounds, securing his tenure in the upper house of the Karnataka Legislature.
The contest held historical resonance for the Congress candidate. Limbikai previously won the seat as a BJP nominee in 2008 by unseating senior Congress leader H.K. Patil. Limbikai later switched alignments to contest on the Congress ticket, seeking to recapture the constituency, but fell short across the six rounds of ballot transfers.
With Returning Officer K.M. Janaki confirming the peaceful conclusion of proceedings as published in accredited regional wire coverage, Sankanur's formal certification solidifies the BJP's presence in the upper chamber representation for northern Karnataka's graduate electorate.
