MUMBAI — The Reserve Bank of India has sanctioned the merger of the Indian branches of Emirates NBD Bank PJSC with domestic private lender RBL Bank, with the scheme set to become effective from December 1.
The regulatory clearance marks the final operational step for integrating the domestic network of the Dubai-based lender into RBL Bank, according to reporting by Moneycontrol.com. The consolidation brings Emirates NBD's existing presence in the country under RBL Bank's broader retail and commercial banking infrastructure.
Terms of the Central Bank Sanction
Under the central bank's approval, all assets, liabilities, and ongoing branch operations of Emirates NBD in India will be transferred to RBL Bank starting next month. The Reserve Bank of India issued the regulatory order in accordance with statutory guidelines governing the amalgamation and operations of banking institutions in the country.
The transaction allows the UAE banking group to align its Indian interests with RBL Bank, facilitating uninterrupted account services, credit facilities, and treasury operations for existing corporate and institutional clients across the affected locations.
Expansion of Domestic Operations
For RBL Bank, the inclusion of Emirates NBD's domestic footprint provides an expanded footprint in cross-border trade, remittances, and multinational corporate banking links between India and the Middle East. Emirates NBD has historically focused its Indian branch operations on serving high-net-worth clients, cross-border corporate transactions, and non-resident Indian trade corridors.
The lenders will implement the transfer on December 1, ensuring compliance with banking transition protocols, customer notification requirements, and systemic balance sheet integration mandated by the central bank.
