HYDERABAD, India — The Telangana government has directed administrative authorities to prepare micro-level contingency plans to prevent anticipated drinking water and electricity shortages linked to the El Nino weather pattern, according to reporting by The Hindu — National.
The state's Chief Secretary instructed departments to take preventive measures across sectors to ensure essential supplies remain uninterrupted. The directive aims to mitigate the adverse climatic conditions associated with El Nino, which often suppresses monsoon rainfall and leads to prolonged dry spells and elevated temperatures across southern India.
Restrictions on Groundwater Extraction
As part of the response to depleting water resources, Special Chief Secretary to the government Jayesh Ranjan announced strict controls on groundwater extraction in urban areas. Ranjan stated that authorities should not grant permission to drill new borewells in Hyderabad for construction or other purposes.
The restriction is designed to protect existing groundwater tables, which face intense pressure during severe weather conditions and extended dry periods. Construction sites and commercial projects often consume significant quantities of groundwater, prompting administrative intervention to reserve available subterranean water for essential public consumption.
Contingency Planning for Essential Services
State officials were asked to evaluate localized vulnerabilities and establish localized operational strategies to manage potential shortfalls. Alongside drinking water preservation, the contingency framework focuses on safeguarding the electricity supply, as soaring temperatures typically drive up power consumption for cooling and agricultural pumping.
The state administration is continuing to assess resource availability across districts to execute these micro-level interventions and avoid acute utility crises in the coming months.
