MUMBAI — The Reserve Bank of India has sanctioned the merger of the Indian operations of Dubai-based lender Emirates NBD Bank with domestic private sector entity RBL Bank, with the scheme scheduled to come into effect on December 1, according to reporting by Moneycontrol.com.
The regulatory approval marks the completion of a key clearance required to integrate the local branches of the United Arab Emirates banking group into RBL Bank's existing network across the country.
Regulatory Sanction for Cross-Border Integration
Under the framework approved by the central bank, Emirates NBD’s branch presence in India will be folded into RBL Bank starting from the first day of December. The move formalizes the structural consolidation between the two financial institutions following reviews by banking regulators.
Emirates NBD, one of the Middle East's largest banking entities, had established branch operations in India to facilitate trade finance, cross-border corporate banking, and remittance corridors between the Gulf region and the Indian market. The transfer of these operations to RBL Bank expands the domestic lender's institutional base while rationalizing Emirates NBD's direct on-ground presence.
Implementation and Transition Timeline
With the central bank's formal clearance in place, both financial institutions are set to proceed with the legal and operational alignment required ahead of the December 1 implementation date. The transition involves the transfer of existing client portfolios, accounts, and regulatory commitments from the foreign lender's local units to RBL Bank.
The approval ensures operational continuity for existing customers of Emirates NBD's branches in India as their banking relationships transition under the regulatory perimeter and management of RBL Bank.
