A sharp political confrontation erupted in New Delhi after the opposition INDIA alliance accused the Union government of actively obstructing its planned demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Addressing reporters, Congress General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal alleged that authorities intervened to cancel bookings at two separate venues in the capital to prevent 21 opposition parties from conducting a symbolic "public impeachment" scheduled for October 30. The event was intended to serve as a curtain-raiser to a larger joint opposition rally scheduled for November 1 to protest alleged electoral roll manipulation and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Disputed Venue Permissions and Police Stance
According to party leadership, the opposition initially secured clearance to host the mock impeachment proceedings at the state-run Ashok Hotel. Venugopal stated that the booking was abruptly withdrawn following direct intervention by law enforcement. The organizers subsequently sought to relocate the proceedings to Ramlila Maidan, noting that the party held an active reservation for the grounds spanning from October 25 to November 3.
"The day before yesterday, when our people came to set up infrastructure, the police didn’t allow," Venugopal said, alleging that the decisions were politically motivated to shield the election chief. He warned that if permissions continue to be denied, opposition leaders would escalate demonstrations outside senior ministers' residences.
Law enforcement officials disputed the party's account. As documented by The Hindu's national coverage, Delhi Police clarified that they had received no formal application seeking permission to conduct a mock impeachment on October 30. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh noted that the organizers had submitted an application specifically for the November 1 gathering at Ramlila Maidan, which was cleared under standard regulatory conditions.
| Date | Planned Action / Event | Venue Status / Official Clearance |
|---|---|---|
| October 25 – November 3 | Ramlila Maidan Ground Reservation Window | Booked by Congress for ongoing political activities |
| October 30 | INDIA Bloc "Public Impeachment" of CEC | Ashok Hotel booking withdrawn; police report no formal event request |
| November 1 | Joint Alliance Demonstration against SIR | Officially approved by Delhi Police subject to regulatory compliance |
Electoral Review Sparking Broader Friction
The dispute over the demonstration site reflects broader political tensions surrounding the Election Commission of India's administrative operations. The 21-party coalition has intensified scrutiny regarding the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision of electoral registers, asserting that revisions disproportionately disenfranchise genuine voters without sufficient transparency.
With the November 1 demonstration officially permitted at Ramlila Maidan, the coalition intends to keep public focus trained on regulatory oversight ahead of upcoming regional election cycles, regardless of the venue hurdles facing their preliminary mock proceedings.
