SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk announced that he plans to distribute one of his personal SpaceX shares to every child living in the United States starting next year, according to reporting by The Verge citing details from CNBC.
With an estimated 72 million children residing in the United States as of July 2025, the proposed giveaway would represent approximately $10.5 billion worth of stock from Musk's holdings in the privately held aerospace company.
Scope and Valuation of Proposed Gift
The scale of the pledge hinges on United States demographic estimates alongside the current private valuation of SpaceX. Distributing tens of millions of shares would constitute one of the largest corporate equity transfers directly targeting minors in American history.
SpaceX, which manufactures rockets, deploys the Starlink satellite internet constellation, and contracts with NASA, remains a private company. Because the aerospace firm is not publicly traded on a stock exchange, any transfer of individual shares from Musk to tens of millions of recipients would involve complex corporate governance and regulatory mechanisms.
Logistical and Regulatory Considerations
The initial reports leave key details open regarding how the equity distribution would be structured and administered. For minors to hold private stock, standard financial procedures generally require custodial accounts managed by parents, legal guardians, or trust vehicles until the beneficiaries reach the age of majority.
Musk, who oversees SpaceX alongside other business ventures including electric vehicle maker Tesla, has not yet released full public documentation detailing the legal structure, exact eligibility requirements, or specific launch date for the initiative beyond the projected start next year.
