Delhi's leading wholesale and retail merchant associations have formally requested an urgent 20-minute dialogue with Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, urging the INDIA bloc to defer its scheduled November 1 mass rally at Ramlila Maidan until after Deepavali.
The appeal, communicated on Wednesday, October 28, represents the second time in four days that the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has petitioned Gandhi, according to reporting from The Hindu's Delhi Bureau. Business leaders caution that drawing an estimated 10 lakh demonstrators into Central Delhi during the peak festive shopping window threatens to create crippling vehicular congestion, deterring millions of seasonal consumers across several surrounding markets.

Festive Revenue at Risk Across 20 Key Hubs
In his communication to the Congress leader, CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal emphasized that merchant representatives from across 20 major shopping corridors are seeking direct engagement to present economic assessments of potential trading losses. The proposed political demonstration lands directly within the most lucrative retail week of the calendar year.
The commercial hubs cited by CTI include Chandni Chowk, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Sadar Bazar, Chawri Bazar, Kashmere Gate, Nabi Karim, Karol Bagh, Ajmeri Gate, and Daryaganj. Additional dense shopping belts flagged by the chamber encompass Nai Sarak, Kinari Bazar, Dariba Kalan, Fatehpuri, Naya Bazar, Filmistan, Paharganj, Gaffar Market, and Jama Masjid.
"We don't want a fight; we want dialogue. Rahul ji himself says that he listens to everyone, listens to the voice of small traders. So, we traders from 20 markets are asking him for 20 minutes," Goyal said in the letter, framed under the broader democratic obligation to hear local stakeholders.
CTI first raised formal objections in an initial dispatch to the Leader of the Opposition on October 24, pointing out that traffic diversions, administrative barricades, and security bandobasts in central trade corridors would halt the movement of delivery carriers and shoppers alike.

Open Invitation for Economic Review
To de-escalate the friction between civil mobilization and commercial stability, the trade body made an open offer: if Gandhi and opposition organizers can demonstrate during talks that the political congregation will instead support commerce and draw retail footfalls without disrupting access, merchant collectives will drop their formal objections.
Conversely, CTI argued that if shop owners effectively document irreversible festive turnover losses, the opposition coalition should exhibit civic flexibility by moving the demonstration past the festival dates. Organizers have not yet issued a public response or confirmed whether the requested delegation meeting will take place before the weekend.
