A missile strike launched by Houthi forces on a military installation in Yemen’s southern Shabwa governorate has killed at least 18 people, according to reporting by Al Jazeera English. The attack targeted a training camp while military personnel were engaged in an exercise.
A spokesman for the Yemeni government forces confirmed that Houthi fighters launched ballistic missiles directly at the site, resulting in the high casualty toll among personnel gathered on the grounds.
Strike on Southern Military Installation
The assault hit the facility during scheduled training activities, catching troops in the middle of active drills. The ballistic missile strike caused immediate fatalities and widespread damage across the camp compound, according to the military spokesman cited in the dispatch.
Shabwa has been an area of strategic contest between Yemeni government forces and Houthi fighters. The southern governorate has seen recurring security incidents and artillery exchanges as opposing factions maneuver for control over territory and infrastructure across the country's southern and central regions.
Continued Attacks on Armed Forces
The targeting of military facilities and troop gatherings remains a persistent tactic in the ongoing Yemeni conflict. Ballistic missile operations by the Houthis have regularly targeted government-aligned installations, bases, and command outposts, frequently causing substantial losses during organized troop assemblies.
Medical and military personnel responded to the Shabwa site to secure the perimeter and assist casualties in the aftermath of the impact. Government military officials have not immediately reported whether additional air defenses were active in the vicinity at the time the missiles struck the training field.
