Amazon has signed an agreement with nuclear reactor developer X-energy and utility provider American Electric Power to fund the construction of a new nuclear power facility in Indiana, according to reporting by The Verge.
The proposed plant aims to generate up to 960 megawatts of carbon-free energy. Under the plan, the facility will supply electricity to both the regional power grid and Amazon's growing operations, addressing the tech sector's increasing demand for consistent, low-emission power sources.
Repurposing Sullivan County Coal Site
The project is slated to replace the defunct Breed Generating Station, a retired coal-fired plant located in Fairbanks, within Sullivan County, Indiana. By selecting a decommissioned fossil fuel site, the development leverages existing infrastructure while shifting local power generation toward cleaner energy alternatives.
The collaboration brings together X-energy's advanced reactor design and American Electric Power's operational reach. The deployment is expected to transform the former coal hub into a modern generation center capable of delivering baseload electricity without carbon emissions.
Big Tech Energy Demands
The agreement highlights a broader trend among major technology companies seeking reliable power generation to support massive computing infrastructure and data centers. As artificial intelligence and cloud services expand, tech giants are increasingly turning to next-generation nuclear technology to meet stringent climate pledges alongside heavy energy consumption.
The Indiana plant represents a substantial investment in small modular reactor deployment, offering a potential template for replacing shuttered coal assets across the country with non-emitting generation capacity.
