European lawmakers have accused the Albanian government of employing underhanded tactics to accelerate the approval of a proposed luxury resort linked to the Trump family, according to reporting by The Guardian — World.
The controversial development, planned for a formerly protected landscape, has sparked demonstrations across the country that have grown increasingly violent. Critics, including a Dutch Member of the European Parliament, allege that officials in Tirana are intentionally sidestepping European Union environmental protection regulations to push the project through without standard oversight.
Scrutiny Over Environmental Protections
European Union representatives have expressed growing concern regarding the transparency of the approval process. Lawmakers accused the administration of utilizing "sneaky" practices to ensure the commercial project advances despite its placement in an area that previously held protected conservation status.
The pushback centers on allegations that the government is actively working to avoid EU environmental standards, raising questions about Albania's regulatory alignment with European norms as it navigates closer ties with the bloc.
Civil Unrest and Political Fallout
The real estate initiative has triggered strong domestic opposition. Protests against the luxury development have escalated into violent clashes on the streets, reflecting deep public dissatisfaction with the management of the country's natural resources.
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama stated publicly that he would "listen to the voices of young people" engaged in the demonstrations. However, Rama has faced mounting criticism for his handling of the situation and his perceived failure to directly engage with long-standing opponents who have consistently contested the controversial resort plans.
