NEW DELHI — The Congress party has demanded an immediate halt to what it described as an unconstitutional Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, insisting that all illegitimately deleted voters must be restored to electoral rolls, according to reporting by The Hindu — National.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh raised concerns over the integrity of voter lists after highlighting findings that legitimate electors were being erroneously removed from official records. The opposition party has called on election authorities to correct the lists and ensure that eligible citizens are not arbitrarily deprived of their voting rights.
Allegations of Wrongful Classifications in Delhi
The demand follows public statements from Ramesh, who shared a screenshot of a media report detailing issues in the national capital. The report claimed that at least 100 voters across two polling booths in Delhi’s Okhla constituency were wrongly classified as absent.
According to the party, such inaccurate classifications effectively threaten to disenfranchise citizens who are otherwise eligible to cast their ballots. Ramesh used the findings to argue that the revision process has led to improper removals and undermines fair electoral participation.
Opposition Demands Reversal and Accountability
Taking aim at the exercise, the Congress party stated that the revision framework must be halted immediately to prevent further damage to voter registers. Party leadership maintained that the deletion of genuine electors constitutes an unconstitutional practice that must be reversed.
Congress insisted that officials must review the records and restore all individuals whose names were improperly removed. The party has urged authorities to verify the current rolls thoroughly and rectify errors before further election cycles proceed in the capital and across the country.
