HYDERABAD — The Telangana government is preparing a strategic 14-month foodgrain buffer to ensure food security for more than three crore residents in response to potential supply disruptions linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon, according to reporting by The Hindu — National.
State authorities have already secured substantial rice reserves and are projecting further arrivals to shield the public distribution system from potential climate-induced agricultural shocks.
Rice Reserves and Supply Projections
Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy stated that Telangana currently has 28.03 lakh tonnes of rice either immediately available or expected soon. This volume is sufficient to sustain the state's regular requirements for 11.7 months, forming the foundation of the expanded buffer plan.
The strategic buildup is intended to cushion the state against dry spells and erratic monsoon cycles often associated with El Niño, which can severely diminish crop yields across the region. By pushing reserves toward a 14-month operational horizon, the administration aims to guarantee continuous access to staples for vulnerable populations dependent on state-backed food distribution.
Expansion of Public Distribution Commodities
Beyond stabilizing rice quantities, the state government is also reviewing options to diversify the provisions distributed to cardholders. Minister Reddy indicated that authorities are actively considering the inclusion of wheat flour and other essential commodities under the Public Distribution System (PDS).
The proposed additions are intended to provide broader nutritional support and stabilize household food baskets as the state monitors agricultural conditions and procurement levels over the coming seasons.
