KOLKATA — The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress has raised sharp questions over safety standards after an award was granted to a festival pandal where 19 people died in a crowd crush, according to reporting by Accredited Wire Reports.
The political fallout follows a deadly stampede at the Chorebagan pandal site in North Kolkata, an incident that prompted intense scrutiny over event management and regulatory oversight. Following the tragedy, authorities placed North Kolkata under prohibitory orders and moved heavy machinery to bulldoze books and clear debris at the site.
Police Response and Arrests
Law enforcement authorities have taken immediate administrative and punitive action in response to the disaster. Seven individuals have been held in connection with the incident at the Chorebagan site, wire dispatches confirmed.
Investigators are also reviewing the committee rosters associated with the pandal, raising queries regarding the presence of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders on the samity list. In an effort to stabilize the area and enforce strict crowd management protocols, officials deployed nine Indian Police Service officers with specialized crowd control experience to the affected area.
Scrutiny Over Crowd Management
The Trinamool Congress challenged the decision to honor the site, questioning whether public spectacle was prioritized over fundamental visitor safety. The incident has renewed scrutiny over crowd disasters across India, drawing focus to event planning, prevention protocols, and the capacity limits enforced during major public gatherings.
Officials continue to monitor the area under active prohibitory orders as inquiries into the causes of the crush and the responsibilities of the organizing samity proceed.
