MUMBAI — A social worker in Maharashtra was allegedly cheated by an individual claiming to be the personal assistant of a state cabinet minister, according to reporting by The Hans India.
Authorities were alerted after the complainant discovered that the suspect had falsely used the identity and influence of a minister's office to carry out the fraud. The victim, who works in the social sector, had approached or interacted with the individual under the impression that the matter was connected directly to official governmental channels.
Allegations of Impersonation
According to the initial complaint, the suspect presented themselves as a legitimate personal assistant to secure trust and execute the fraudulent activity. Impersonation of ministerial staff has emerged as a repeated tactic used by fraudsters seeking to exploit citizens attempting to navigate official administrative processes or secure state-level interventions.
Investigators are reviewing the communications exchanged between the accused and the victim to establish the exact timeline and the financial or material scope of the fraud. Preliminary findings suggest the suspect operated without any formal authorization or employment within the minister's secretariat.
Investigation Underway
Law enforcement personnel have initiated an inquiry into the matter following the formal report lodged by the social worker. Investigators are working to track the suspect through digital footprints, phone records, and financial transactions tied to the interaction.
Officials frequently caution the public against engaging with intermediaries claiming to represent political leaders or government offices, urging individuals to verify credentials directly through official department directories before entering into any agreements or transferring funds.
