LONDON — More than 2,000 people gathered in London to participate in Bathukamma and Dasara celebrations organized by the Telangana Association of United Kingdom, according to reporting by The Hindu — National. The event placed a deliberate emphasis on regional handloom textiles alongside the traditional festive observances.
The large community turnout marked a significant cultural assembly for the diaspora, drawing attendees together to mark the prominent autumn festivals central to the southern Indian state of Telangana.
Cultural Assembly and Festivities
The dual celebration of Bathukamma, a vibrant floral festival associated with womanhood and nature, and Dasara provided a platform for members of the Indian diaspora to reconnect with regional customs abroad. Community members gathered in London to observe the seasonal traditions through shared cultural performances and customary rituals.
Participants took part in the festivities while highlighting traditional attire, aligning with the event's dedicated focus on heritage preservation within the expatriate community.
Focus on Handloom Sector
A central component of the London gathering was the promotion of Telangana’s indigenous weaving industry. Anil Kurmachalam, founder of the Telangana Association of United Kingdom, emphasized the importance of supporting the sector during the proceedings.
Kurmachalam called for sustained efforts to promote both the rich cultural identity of Telangana and its regional handloom crafts on the global stage. By integrating handloom awareness directly into the holiday festivities, organizers sought to expand international recognition for traditional weavers and artisan products from the state.
