MUMBAI — Maharashtra is preparing to establish a new Film City across 125 acres in the coastal district of Ratnagiri, marking the state’s fifth dedicated complex for cinema and television production, according to reporting by Accredited Wire Reports.
The initiative will expand production infrastructure into the Konkan division, adding to the state's existing network of entertainment and studio hubs. The project designates a substantial land parcel intended to support large-scale outdoor locations, indoor shooting floors, and technical post-production facilities outside the traditional center of Mumbai.
Expansion Into the Konkan Coast
The selection of Ratnagiri aligns with efforts to decentralize Maharashtra's entertainment sector while leveraging the distinct geography of the Konkan belt. The regional landscape offers natural coastal, rural, and forested backdrops, which authorities aim to integrate into mainstream filmmaking logistics.
According to the dispatch, the 125-acre development will serve as an alternative destination for production houses seeking dedicated infrastructure away from congested urban centers. Planners anticipate that establishing permanent facilities in the district will reduce operational costs for long-schedule film and television shoots while creating sustained regional employment.
Broadening Studio Infrastructure
The planned Ratnagiri development follows Maharashtra's long-term strategy to bolster its position as India's premier media capital. The complex will become the fifth such specialized venue in the state, complementing long-standing studios such as Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari in Goregaon, Mumbai, alongside newer regional initiatives.
State planners are focusing on master-planning the 125-acre zone to ensure seamless transit, power stability, and modern filming amenities. Further details regarding the construction phases, financial outlay, and allocation of studio lots are expected as state departments complete preliminary site assessments.
