Kotak Institutional Equities has restructured its benchmark model portfolio, initiating fresh positions in mid-cap stocks that corrected by as much as 16% over the past month. The brokerage noted in its latest Strategy report that recent market pullbacks created an attractive price-to-value gap across select quality franchises, offering an opportune entry point to counter prevailing negative sentiment on Dalal Street.
According to analysis published by The Economic Times, the strategy report detailed significant mid-cap additions including Aster DM Healthcare, Dixon Technologies, and Emcure Pharmaceuticals. Analysts highlighted that broader market weakness and overblown regulatory concerns had pushed valuations down to levels where the risk-reward dynamic turned decisively favorable.
Tactical Additions and Mid-Cap Upside Potential
Among the standout additions, Aster DM Healthcare entered the model portfolio after declining 15% over the trailing month. Market anxiety surrounding potential government price controls on medicines and hospital supplies weighed on the counter. Kotak stated that Aster DM trades at approximately 25 times one-year forward EV/EBITDA and established a target price of Rs 880, indicating a potential upside of 37%. The brokerage noted that prevailing trading multiples sufficiently discount moderate regulatory pricing interventions.
Dixon Technologies also returned to the portfolio following a 16% monthly decline caused by broad market liquidations. Kotak had previously exited the electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider due to elevated valuations, but reinstated the stock at 42 times forward price-to-earnings (P/E). With an assigned target price of Rs 14,900, Kotak projects a 33% upside, citing Dixon's sustained dominance in India's expanding EMS sector.
Similarly, Emcure Pharmaceuticals saw its weighting established after dropping 9% in a month. Kotak assigned the company a target price of Rs 2,225, pointing to a potential 26% advance from its trading multiple of 26 times forward P/E. Addressing sector-wide worries, Kotak’s research team stated that across-the-board government price caps remain highly improbable, projecting resilient underlying earnings growth.
| Stock Addition | Recent 1-Month Correction | Forward Valuation Multiple | Target Price (INR) | Projected Upside |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aster DM Healthcare | -15% | 25x EV/EBITDA | Rs 880 | 37% |
| Dixon Technologies | -16% | 42x P/E | Rs 14,900 | 33% |
| Emcure Pharmaceuticals | -9% | 26x P/E | Rs 2,225 | 26% |
Large-Cap Realignment and Weight Shifts
Beyond adding mid-cap selections, Kotak Institutional Equities conducted a broad rebalancing across its large-cap allocations to optimize portfolio beta. In a notable shift, the brokerage replaced holding firm Bajaj Finserv with operating entity Bajaj Finance, preferring direct lending exposure despite the holding company discount.
Simultaneously, Mankind Pharma was reclassified from the mid-cap category to large-caps following market capitalization adjustments. To fund these tactical mid-cap entries, Kotak trimmed weights across several prominent market heavyweights. The institutional desk reduced exposure to HDFC Life, ICICI Bank, and Infosys, while cutting positions in Axis Bank and State Bank of India (SBI) by 50 basis points each. Conversely, the brokerage expanded its portfolio weighting in Reliance Industries, positioning for resilient domestic consumption and enterprise strength.
