NEW DELHI — Member of Parliament John Brittas has formally approached the President of India seeking intervention as an indefinite hunger strike by Jawaharlal Nehru University students reached its 17th consecutive day.
The demonstration began on October 3 following what Brittas described as the university administration's failure to resolve longstanding and genuine concerns raised by the student body, according to reporting by The Hindu — National.
Appeal to the University Visitor
In his representation, Brittas urged the President, who serves as the Visitor to central universities including JNU, to step into the escalating dispute. The appeal emphasizes the protracted nature of the demonstration, which has persisted for over two weeks without a resolution between campus authorities and the protesting students.
Brittas highlighted that the prolonged demonstration stems from growing frustration over unresolved issues that the university leadership has allegedly neglected. The outreach to the highest constitutional authority reflects mounting concern over the standoff at the premier institution.
Prolonged Campus Standoff
The hunger strike has entered its third week, with students continuing their peaceful action to demand administrative action on their grievances. Despite the demonstration extending past the two-week mark, official channels within the university have yet to bring the agitation to a close, prompting external political appeals to break the deadlock.
