NEW DELHI — Citizens for Justice and Peace leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das will remain in custody after a magistrate extended their remand by two days, according to reporting by Accredited Wire Reports.
The pair were produced before a magistrate following a police request seeking an extension of their judicial custody. The court's decision ensures both leaders remain detained as legal proceedings continue around their case.
Bail Hearing Deferred and Sureties Rejected
The custody extension follows complications during court hearings regarding the leaders' release. The bail hearing for the CJP figures was put off after the presiding magistrate cited a threat to life, Accredited Wire Reports noted.
At the same time, efforts to secure their release encountered administrative hurdles when four sureties submitted on their behalf were rejected. CJP representatives alleged that authorities were deliberately causing a delay in the release of the two leaders as legal teams attempted to clear the necessary documentation.
Continuing Delhi Demonstrations
The ongoing detention of Ranka and Das has unfolded alongside demonstrations in the capital. Wire dispatches covering the Delhi protests live noted that there was no immediate update confirming the release of Das and Ranka during the court proceedings.
Amid the legal standoff, protest voices addressed the prolonged detentions, with Dipke stating that they would continue their collective stance. The court has not yet confirmed a new schedule for resolving the rejected sureties or taking up the deferred bail arguments.
