Arsenal exited the Carabao Cup in a major upset on Wednesday after League Two side Fleetwood Town defeated them 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The round-of-16 defeat was compounded by the dismissal of 16-year-old Arsenal winger Max Dowman, who received a straight red card late in normal time.
Despite controlling 78% of possession and generating 26 attempts on goal, Arsenal fell behind and could only manage an equalizer before being dragged into the shootout. Fleetwood subsequently converted all five of their penalties to seal the upset.
According to BBC Sport, Dowman made just his second start of the season after impressing with two goals against Ipswich in the preceding round. With regular wingers Bukayo Saka, Christos Tzolis, and Noni Madueke sidelined by injuries, manager Mikel Arteta handed the teenager a prominent opportunity to stake a claim in the senior side.
The contest unraveled for the teenager when he responded to a heavy tackle from Fleetwood's Harrison Neal. Referee Michael Salisbury showed Dowman a red card after the winger made a retaliatory movement with his leg. The incident marked Dowman's second dismissal of the month, having previously been sent off while on international duty with England's Under-19 squad.
Following the dismissal, Arteta was visibly frustrated on the touchline, exchanging stern words with the teenager as he headed down the tunnel. In post-match commentary documented by BBC Sport, Arteta emphasized that squad discipline had been a point of emphasis before kickoff.
"When we prepared the context of the match, we were very clear on the things to respect, the things that emotionally we have to dominate," Arteta said. "It was very clear."
Arteta's visible touchline reprimand drew scrutiny from television pundits. Speaking on Sky Sports, former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson argued that the manager's public reaction was disproportionate given the player's inexperience.
"You have to remember he is 16 years of age, he's a kid," Merson said. "He wasn't having the greatest of nights so he's going to get frustrated... If that's Viktor Gyokeres he isn't doing that. That's what I don't like. If it's an experienced international, I don't think he does that. He's a human being. He's not the last person to get sent off for Arsenal and he's not the first."
Arsenal now refocus on their Premier League and European campaigns without domestic cup fixture congestion, while managing the disciplinary progression of their young academy prospects.
